Mars started perfecting his stage presence almost as soon as he could walk: As a three-year old, Mars rose to fame as one of the world’s youngest Elvis impersonators. Over the years, the crowd-pleaser has learned how to treat his audiences with an energetic live show that features a healthy mix of old-school choreography, vocal-heavy power ballads, and soulful musical interludes.

Maurizio Cattelan came out of his self-imposed, five-year retirement from the art world just in time. His work has always been prescient, sometimes uncannily so. His life-like wax portrait of Pope Paul II in full papal regalia lying inert under a felled meteorite—La Nona Ora (The Ninth Hour) (1999)—presaged the sexual abuse scandals of the Catholic Church. AC Forniture Sud (Southern Suppliers FC [Football Club]), a performative piece from 1991 in which the artist organized an Italian soccer team exclusively comprising North African immigrants, coincided with the establishment of a xenophobic political party in Italy. What Cattelan couldn’t have predicted was the unprecedented number refugees that would land on Italian shores seeking asylum, or the rising tide of hatred and fear now sweeping Europe in response.

Cattelan’s 2007 sculpture, Ave Maria, is also shockingly anticipatory. The work is composed of three white male arms protruding at an angle from a gallery wall, their precise positions and overt repetition unmistakably evoking the intense choreography of the “Heil Hitler” salute (despite the religious inflection of the title). The fact that the appendages are wearing business attire—a sign, perhaps, of the unabated rise of corporate power—frighteningly suggests today’s normalization of neo-Nazi ideology here and abroad.

Enter Cattelan’s America” (2016), the 18-karat gold, fully functioning toilet that has been installed at the Guggenheim for nearly a year in a long-term, sculptural performance of interactive art. Like all of Cattelan’s most complex works, this sculpture is laden with possible meanings. There is the art-historical trajectory, from Duchamp and Manzoni to more contemporary artists like John Miller and Wim Delvoye, that traffics in scatological iconography. The equation between excrement and art has long been mined by neo-Marxist thinkers who question the relationship between labor and value. Expanding upon this economic perspective, there is also the ever-increasing divide in our country between the wealthy and the poor that threatens the very stability of our culture. Cattelan explicitly comments on this fact by creating what he called “one-percent art for the ninety-nine percent.” The gold toilet—a cipher for the excesses of affluence—has been available for all to use in the privacy of one of the Guggenheim’s single-stall, gender-neutral bathrooms. More than one hundred thousand people have waited patiently in line for the opportunity to commune with art and with nature.

Yet it is the Trump reference that resonates so loudly today. When the artist proposed the sculpture in mid-2015, Donald Trump had just announced his bid for the presidency. It was inconceivable at the time that this business mogul, he of the eponymous gilded tower, could actually win the White House. When the sculpture comes off view on September 15, Trump will have been in office for 238 days, a term marked by scandal and defined by the deliberate rollback of countless civil liberties, in addition to climate-change denial that puts our planet in peril.

That Trump is synonymous with golden toilets was proven not at the Guggenheim but in a recent satirical pop-up “exhibition” in midtown Manhattan staged by Trevor Noah of the Daily Show that he called the “Donald J. Trump Presidential Twitter Library.” In addition to framed tweet storms, visitors were treated to a “tour” of the Oval Office, where they could don a Trump wig and pose with an, albeit fake, golden toilet.

Cattelan’s “America,” like all his greatest work, is at once humorous and searing in its critique of our current realities. Though crafted from millions of dollars’ worth of gold, the sculpture is actually a great leveler. As Cattelan has said, “Whatever you eat, a two-hundred-dollar lunch or a two-dollar hot dog, the results are the same, toilet-wise.” Art-wise, the work reached a certain pinnacle of acceptability—or notoriety—when it was featured on the cover of the New York Post (September 15, 2016) with the headline, “We’re #1 (and #2!),” and an article titled, “The Guggenheim Wants You to Crap All Over ‘America.’” However, Cattelan’s anticipation of Trump’s America will, perhaps, be the lasting imprint of the sculpture’s time at the Guggenheim.

Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the most prolific and renowned architects of the 20th century, a radical designer and intellectual who embraced new technologies and materials, pioneered do-it-yourself construction systems as well as avant-garde experimentation, and advanced original theories with regards to nature, urban planning, and social politics. Marking the 150th anniversary of the American architect’s birth on June 8, 1867, MoMA presents Frank Lloyd Wright at 150: Unpacking the Archive, a major exhibition that critically engages his multifaceted practice. The exhibition comprises approximately 450 works made from the 1890s through the 1950s, including architectural drawings, models, building fragments, films, television broadcasts, print media, furniture, tableware, textiles, paintings, photographs, and scrapbooks, along with a number of works that have rarely or never been publicly exhibited. Structured as an anthology rather than a comprehensive, monographic presentation of Wright’s work, the exhibition is divided into 12 sections, each of which investigates a key object or cluster of objects from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Archives, interpreting and contextualizing it, and juxtaposing it with other works from the Archives, from MoMA, or from outside collections. The exhibition seeks to open up Wright’s work to critical inquiry and debate, and to introduce experts and general audiences alike to new angles and interpretations of this extraordinary architect.

Frank Lloyd Wright at 150: Unpacking the Archive is organized by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library, Columbia University.

Organized by Barry Bergdoll, Curator, Department of Architecture and Design, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History and Archaeology, Columbia University; with Jennifer Gray, Project Research Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design, The Museum of Modern Art.

Bill Gates made his largest gift since the turn of the century, giving away Microsoft Corp. shares that accounted for 5 percent of his fortune, the world’s biggest.

The billionaire donated 64 million of the software maker’s shares valued at $4.6 billion on June 6, according to a Securities & Exchange Commissionfiling released Monday. While the recipient of the gift wasn’t specified, Gates has made the majority of his donations to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the charity he and his wife use to direct their philanthropic efforts.

It’s the largest gift of Microsoft shares that Gates has made since 2000. The 61-year-old gave away $16 billion worth of Microsoft shares in 1999 and $5.1 billion a year later, according to calculations by Bloomberg.

Spokesmen for Microsoft and Gates didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Historic Giving

Bill and Melinda Gates have given away about $35 billion of stock and cash since 1994, based on the value of the shares at the time of gifts, according to a review of two decades worth of Gates Foundation tax returns, annual reports and regulatory filings. Gates createdthe Giving Pledge in 2010 with billionaire investorWarren Buffett, and the pair have been joined by 168 others who’ve promised to give the majority of their wealth to charity.

Gates has probably directed more than 700 million shares of Microsoft into the foundation, adjusting for stock splits. Those would be worth about $50 billion today had he held onto them. The June gift represents 38 percent of his holdings in the company and is the latest in a long line of Microsoft share disposals that have whittled his stake down from 24 percent in 1996 to 1.3 percent today.

Gates remains the richest person on earth after the donation with a fortune the Bloomberg Billionaires Index values at $86.1 billion. The drop once again puts Inc.’s Jeff Bezos close to the top spot. Bezos, whose fortune has risen 30 percent since Jan. 1, briefly leapfrogged Gates to become the world’s richest person based on intraday prices last month.

Patrick Vieira didn't think he wanted to coach. He never considered becoming a coach during his illustrious playing career, an 18-year span that saw him win three Premier League titles, five Serie A championships, the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship. Even after he retired in 2011 and took a job as the football development executive at Manchester City, Vieira didn't believe his future was being the man in charge of an entire team.

But while Vieira was working with players, helping them individually to develop their skills, City executive Brian Marwood observed the former midfielder. He saw Vieira's ability to communicate with the younger men who were trying to improve their game and the ease with which he imparted the wisdom he learned during the thousands of hours he spent on the field. Marwood thought Vieira might be able to succeed with a whole team. In the spring of 2013, Marwood appointed the French legend as reserve team and development squad manager.

Vieira thrived in the uncomfortable new environment.

"[Marwood] put me in the situation where I'd never been before," he says to ESPN FC in an exclusive interview. "I quite enjoyed it and quite liked it.

"I was surprised. And I'm still surprised."

Three years later, the man who never thought he would coach finds himself leading New York City FC, one of Major League Soccer's best teams. Not only that, but NYCFC boasts one of MLS' most distinct playing styles, a high-risk, high-reward, build-from-the-back mentality that produces exciting attacking soccer, even in the small confines of Yankee Stadium.

The broad strokes of the style come from the higher-ups at the City Football Group that owns NYCFC -- Claudio Reyna, the MLS club's director of football operations, calls it "part of the group methodology" -- but the day-to-day implementation falls to Vieira. He's the one responsible for tutoring players, drilling tactics and getting the little things correct. His success in doing so has NYCFC near the top of the Eastern Conference for the second year in a row and tied for the league lead in goals scored.

While the club has given up its fair share of terrible goals, the result of bad turnovers at the back and other miscues, it hasn't deviated from its plan. To many, that's deserving of praise.

"So many times in soccer we see people talk about style of play, but it's all a bunch of bulls---, because they really aren't trying to implement anything other than the most pragmatic way of playing in that moment against that opponent," former LA Galaxy GM and current Fox Sports analyst Alexi Lalas says. "For me, a real style of play means, 'This is who we are and we live and die by it. We don't change to fit the players. The players adapt or they are not part of it.'"

To play the same way, even after failure, takes confidence, both from the management and the players. That starts at the top, with the coach.

"The players buy into what he's saying," NYCFC midfielder Rodney Wallace says. "Even if sometimes it goes wrong, it doesn't matter because he knows that at some point it's going to work out. He's not afraid to make a mistake and he's not afraid of when we make mistakes. He knows that we were out there doing exactly what he's asking.

"The type of football that we play is exciting. It makes me want to wake up every morning and go to work."

The plan didn't come together overnight. Vieira took the NYCFC job at the beginning of 2016 after the club parted ways with founding manager Jason Kreis, but Vieira admits he struggled at first. He had to adapt to the peculiarities of MLS and understand soccer culture in the U.S. (Amusingly, Vieira calls the sport "soccer" when he talks about the game in the U.S. and "football" when speaking about teams overseas.)

During his time in Manchester, he developed ideas about how he wanted his team to play and how the City Football Group's management thought NYCFC should play, but the reality of actually getting to America and working with the players here made him realize he had to adjust his methods and style. He uses more video, conducts plenty of tactical drilling and unit work along with individual instruction, and keeps an open mind. Vieira is only a couple years into what could be a long coaching career, and he knows he's still learning.

"For him, there is an ability to test things out in a way that he might not get in other situations on other teams," Lalas says. "Because it's MLS. There's no relegation. And there's less scrutiny and therefore less pressure."

At some point, perhaps sooner rather than later, Vieira will want to move on to a bigger gig. He says he's happy building something at NYCFC now, and there's no reason not to believe him. He loves living in the city, a place where he'd come in the offseason during his playing days, but it's only natural that a competitive guy will grow restless eventually. When he does, the reps he's getting in the relatively uncritical U.S. will benefit him well. It's not out of the question to think he'll be the first great MLS coaching export of the modern era.

The move into coaching required a different mindset than he had as a player.

"When you are playing and you are on the field, you are thinking about yourself," Vieira says. "When you are the coach, you have to think about 26 players before thinking about yourself. You have to take things with humility. You have to understand that your playing career is finished, and then you have to look at the game in a different way."

Still, those playing days are not very far gone. How would Vieira, the coach, feel about managing Vieira, the player?

"I'd love to have a player like myself, the way I used to be," he says. "I always played with a lot of passion and was working hard for my teammates. I was thinking about my teammates before I was thinking about myself. So yes, I would like to coach Patrick."

He won't get a chance, of course. But Vieira the player would no doubt be surprised to fast-forward a decade and find where he landed. Perhaps he shouldn't have been. As it turns out, this coaching thing, it's not so bad.
